WELLINbTON, leb.uary 6. Albert John Udy, a young Wairarapa fanner, who was found guilty of destroying a house at. Carterton with an explosive, came before Mr Justice Chapman to-day for sentence. Counsel for prisoner made a strong appeal for leniency. He said tho trouble was solely duo to excessive drinking, and suggested that probation be granted and a prohibition order issued against the prisoner, whoso neighbour and mother were prepared to enter into a reasonable bond for his ■ good behaviour. His Honour again deferred sentence to enable him to consider how the ends of justice could be ; best met. In an assault nnd robbery - case, John Condon and Thomas Done- ! van were found guilty, and William Henry Adams was acquitted. In I regard to Donovan, the Judge said .ho did not consider his South African ■ convictions sufficiently clearly made out, but he thought the conviction at i Hobart was satisfactorily proved. , Condon and Donovan were each senI tonced to three years' imprisonment. : William John Hogan was sentenced to six weeks' imprisonment for assauit- | ing a man with a beer glass. George i Waters pleaded guilty to a charge of | breaking, entering and theft, and was j remanded for medical examination, to determine whether he was sane or not. I Herbert Wallace, alias Worman, convicted of theft of money from tho steamer Mangapapa, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment.
