FIGURES FOR PORT OF

LYTTELTON

Somo interesting figures with reference to tho port of Lyttelton were supplied to members of tho Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday in tho shape of tho chairman's annual report.

The report stated that the Board's ordinary cash receipts for the year ended December 31st, 1912, constituted a record, being £72,273 3s sd, an increase of £4314 3s over those of the previous year, and, in addition, tho Board's cash receipts were augmented by tho proceeds from tho salo of tho dredge .Manchester, namely, £9812 lis 3d, making the total cash receipts £82,085 14s Bd.

The Board's expenditure for the same period was £66.163 18s 6d, made up as follows: —Ordinary expenditure, £41,459 12is sd; capital expenditure, £24,704 6s Id; total, £66,163 18s 6d, as compared with £87,930 4s 3d during tho previous year. Tho tonnage of goods passing over tho wharves aggregated 592,104 tons, as against 555,695 tons during the former year, and the wharfage dues received totalled £34,168 9s 3d, as compared with £33,505 19s 5d during the year 1911.

The.value of imports at the Port of Lyttelton for the year ended December 31st, 1912, amounted to £3,174,398, an increase of £177,195 over the previous year, while tho exports were £2,904,383, an increase of .£153,381 over tho year 1911.

During the year under review 2191 vessels were entered inwards at Lyttelton, with an aggregato tonnage of 2,236,189 tons,.: as against 2265 vessels, aggregating 2,137,051 tons '-during the former year. The pilotage and port charges collected during the year 1912 amounted to £22,389 9s 3d, which represents an increase of £1774 13s 6d on the previous year's figures. The Board closed the Board's financial year with a credit balance of £35.932 lis 2d, made up as follows: —■ Special renewal fund, £31,201 Is 7d: special accident insurance fund, £2460 6s 8d; harbour fund current account, £2271 3s lid. Tho Chairman, in commenting on -the report, doubted whether there was any Harbour Board in New Zealand in a better financial position. Members unanimously agreed with this opinion.
