MR W. D. LYSNAR'S MISSION.
(srecTAL TO "the press.")
WELLINGTON, January 15
Mr W. D. Lysnar, of Gisborne, who takes a special interest in the frozen meat trade, returned from London today. Mr Lysnar condemns tho Port of London Authority for not making necessary improvements in connection with tho meat trade. . They desire the landing place for meat to be still at tho Albert Docks, and not at the South-West. India Dock. Naturally enough, ho says, the London men desire to hold tho trade for their badly-; situated uptown stores, and the Port of .London Authority has been induced to depart from its original promises and do something elso that Ls unsuitable, and which will in no way relieve cur trade from tho worst blot on the system —barging and carting. Mr Lysnar, however, will probably not find much sympathy in regard to tho drastic remedy that ho propose*, namely, to shift the trade Irom the Port of London to West of England ports, though he alleges that the meat could b# shipped from theso ports to Smithfield cheaper, quicker and cleaner than from the present docks. He has Ronio proposal to put before the New Zealand producers about the suggested shifting of the trade, but he is not yet at liberty to state what it is. At present, ho says, meat cannot bo railed from the London docks to Smithneld or tiio uptown stores; it has either to be barged or carted. Barging takes eight hours and carting three hours. If the meat were discharged at Bristol, it could be sent direct by rail to t>im'thfield, where there are facilities to-day for handling as many as 100 trucks ot •neat at a time. Ho adds that if the proposals which -.vill shoitly be placed before the Producers' Association in New Zealand are adopted, th** necessity for "partial damage" insurance will also disappear, and the producer will bo sufficiently protect-*! by taking out a policy for total loss.
