Tho Grand Legion of the Merit Agricole is worn by 72.15 M Frenchmen, the violet ribbon of Academic Lea ruins by more tluin 200,000. Some 33,440 members of fire brigades wear their own spec a! medal, while 165,501 workpeople wear the medal and ribbon of Labour.

The "Triumph* motor cycTo opened tho New Year very auspiciously by sweeping the board of all tho important prizes in tho Reliability Trials conducted by the North Canterbury Motor Cyclist*' Club on January Ist, 2nd and 3rd. Tho trials included a great deal of stiff hill country, and provided a really gruelling test. * Tho Triumph proved as successful in the hands of a private owner as on previous occasions, tho ono privately-owned "Triumph' m tho contest sccurinr, first place in its class. This is the "Triumph' 7 record in the trials:—-Trade Class—G. B. Brown I, 11. E. Douglas 3, F. Haworth 4, all on "Triumnhs." Private Owners' Class—C. lkmningtori 1, on a "Triumph." Teams' Prize —G. B. Brown, 11. E. Douglas, and F. Haworth 1, on "Triumphs.' 5 "Triumph" Cup for most meritorious performance—Won for second timo *n succession by C. Bonnington on "Triumph," winning Cup outright. Lowest Petrol Consumption —G. B. Brown 1. 3 pints 3oz for oil miles on a "Triumph.". And now something about tho "'Triumph" attempt to make a record run from Christchurch to Kaikoura and back. It will bo remembered that tho courso was suggested in tho first instance by ono of our trado competitors. Wo accepted the suggestion with avidity, and as wo welcome any chance of giving tho "Triumph" a good stiff test, wo aro making tho run even I though thoso who suggested it aro not i prepared to come to tho mark with tho { 'Tnumph" rider. JMr G. B. Brown, ! mounted on ono of tho latest model j "Triumphs," started at tho dawning to-day on his long journey. Ho was despatched from Cathedral Square oy tho officers of tho N.C. Motor Cyclists' Club, and ho will be properly checked en route. As Mr Brown has never boon over tho road from Cheviot to Kaikoura, no prophecies can bo made as to tho timo of his return, but barring accidents ho should bo back in Cathedral Square before 8 o'clock this evening.
