JOTTINGS FOR FARMERS.
Wheat crops aro ripening very fast in North Canterbury. The cutting of oats is becoming general, and indicates a harvest much earlier than usual.
A Timaru messago says that, a few successive hot days are ripening tho crops off too rapidly, and fanners are anxious for a change and showers. It is stated that more hay has been made this season than for many years past.
Tho country adjoining the Midland Railway line," and particularly that about Darheld. is looking in splendid fettle at the present time. In some places the soil has a baked appearance, but so far thero has been an adequate supply of moisture, and food tor stock is abundant. Ono farmer iniormed a 'Tress' representative that tho oat crops had flourished beyond earlier expectations, and lie considered that the season would sco some record yields.
The Greendale branch of the Far-, mors' Union held a meeting on Thursday last to consider the question of ap£ointing an organiser lor the North anterbury district. Mr George Sheat, president of the North Canterbury district, delivered an address, and after a few questions had been answered, Mr J. D. itudd, sen., moved tho following resolution, which was carried unanimously:—"That this meeting expresses its approval of the proposal to appoint an organiser for the Union, believing that its strength will be increased, both numerically and financially thereby." A letter from Mr E. C. Jack, Dominion secretary, was read, regarding the shortage of farm and domestic labour in the Dominion, and the necessity of importing it, and requesting that a sahetTdled list of the district's requirements bo forwarded to him. It was decided that ij would not be possible to obtain the desired information, but tho following resolution was carried: — ''That this meeting is convinced that the great dearth of labour, both farm and domestic, is becoming more acute, and should be mot by tho systematic immigration of these classes of labour."
