THE POVERTY BAY WORKS.
(BPECIAI. TO "THE TRESS.")
GISBORNE, January 14. Work is proceeding quietly at the local freezing works." and there is' little indication of the threatened strike. No intimntion has been received by the employers from the men, who are apparently waiting instructions from their executive.
It is stated that it is unlikely that there will be any step taken by the local men until the expiry of the Gisborn© agreement on February Ist. The Freezers Union has adopted a resolution deciding to await a decisive move before taking any action in the matter.
At the Rangiora market yesterday th© troublo'with the slaughtermen" was generally discussed. It did not seriously affect th© market, however, as the representatives of the freezing companies were operating. It was proposed to hold a meeting at tho yards and ask Mr C. ,H. Ensor to give an address, but this was not given effect to. The farmers generally did not resent any proposal for the slaughtermen to refer their claim to 30s to arbitration, but they considered it was unwise to do so by declaring a strike just at the present time.
