• NEW LINE OPENED. j On tho last day of tho old year the 1 new cable between Auckland and Sydney was opened. The station at i Doubtless Bay has been abandoned as ! the new cable runs direct into the | Auckland Post Office, where tho Cable Company has special offices. Yesterday tho Hon. R. Heaton | Rhodes, Postmaster-General, was adj v.sed by the Telegrapn Engineer at | Auckland that the Pacific cable work j was now going direct from that office, and that tho Company's staff would j return from Doubtless Bay on New JYo.ir's Day. EV.rything, he said, wa3 i working satUfactonly under the tube ! system for relaying traffic to the old j offices. I In connection with the opening, the j Hon.- Mr Rhodes telegraphed to Mr I Milward, manager in the Pacific for the Pacifio Cablo Board, at'Auc£and, as follows: — Pleaso accept my congratulations on tho 6iie<*-£Sful opening of your now cjable, which will still further drawjtno bonds uniting the Southern Dominions of the Empire and help io bring them into closer association on points of material interests." The reply received from Mr Milward Was as follows :— "Much gratified receipt of your message nnd pleased to bo able to report that" now cables have done excellent work to-day. Am confident when staff familiar with new conditions, transit times between Australia and New Zealand wiTl bo reduced to absolute minimum. Please accept my best thanks for your promise to be present at luncheon in Auckland on January 14th to celebrate the occasion."
