The obituary list for the past year beyond the Dominion includes the Emperor of Japan, the King of Denmark, and the Regent of Bavaria; Lord Lister, father of antiseptic surgery; Mr Whitelaw Reid, American Ambassador in England; Count yon Aerenthal, Austrian Minister of Foreign Affairs; •M. Jules Massenet, and Mr Coleridge Taylor, famous composers; Mr Wilbur Wright, one of the inventors of the aeroplane; Sir George White, the defender of Ladysmitn; Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, the well-known artist; Mr Justin McCarthy, author and statesman ; Mr Henry Labouchero, founder of "Truth"; Lord Peel, a famous Speaker of tho House of Commons; the Duko of Fife; Miss Octavia Hill, who started the housing movement; Mr Gcorgo Rignold, the celebrated Shakespearean actor. During the year several people prominent in the Dominion's affairs, or in those of Christchurch or Canterbury, and a large number of old colonists, havo passed away. The list includes Sir John Logan Campbell, "father of Auckland," . Sir WtJlam Steward, M.L.C V ex-Speaker of the House, the Hon. James McGowan, M.L.C., the Hon. J. Marshall, M.L.C., "King" Mahuta, Mr J. V. Logan, ex-Superin-tendent of Telegraphs, Mr John Webster, one of the oldest identities in the Auckland province. Mr C. Hood Williams, Mr Joseph Gould, Mr F. de C. Malet, the Rev. C. H. Moreland, tho Rev. Canon Hare, the Rev. Canon Dunkley, and, among departed pioneers, Mrs S. C. Farr, Mrs Jan© Luke, Mrs Margaret Hornbrook, Mrs R. M. Cresswell, Mrs Magnus Allan, Mrs George Searle, Mrs Elizabeth Watson, Mrs Agnus Harman, Mrs E. Thompson, Mr W. Gordon Rich, Mr Isaac Wilson, Mr Alexander Greig, Mr C. J. W\ Cookson, Mr W. H. Dawe, Mr Henry Kimbor. Mr Charles Storey. Mr G. C. Waby, Mr J. T. Brown, and the Rev. Septimus Dolamore.
