Baron Charles Hardingo has been Viceroy ot' India since 1010. He was born m 185ri, and was educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge. He entered the diplomatic service in 18S0, was third secretary ISS", second secretary 1885, and secretary of tho Legation, Teheran, in 1806. Ho was secretary of tho Embassy at St. Petersburg 1899-1003, Assistant Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs 1903-4, and British Ambassador at St. Petersburg 190-1-0. He was appointed permanent Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs in 1900, and held this position until 1910, when he was appointed to his present position. Ho holds numerous crosses for serrice, both English arid foreign distinctions having been conferred on him.
