ASHBURTON
Christmas Evo at Ashburton passed off quietly. There were not many extra people about during the afternoon, but in the evening tho streets presented a busy appearance, and tho various shopkeepers appeared to bo doing a large amount of extra business. Not much was attempted in tho way of outside decoration, but most of tho shop windows wore set out in ft most attractive manner with articles of commerce specially appropriate to the season.

Delightful weather prevailed for Christmas Eye and shopkeepers-reaped a golden harvest, especially in tho evening when there were record crowds in the streets. To-day the weather is glorious, and various excursions and picnics are being carried out under ideal conditions. WELLINGTON. December 20. The holiday passed off quietly in glorious weather. Christmas Eve saw the city streets throngpd with crowds of merrymakers, and business people generally wore smiling faces. Christmas was quietly celebrated in Lvttelton. the only indication of the season being tho arrival and departure of large numbers of passengers. Special services were held in St. Saviour's Church, Holy Trinity Church, and St. Joseph's Roman " Catholic Church. There was a larg" fiVet of steamers in uort. and the Christmas festival was duly celebrated on board.
