EXTORT DUTY PROPOSED,
EMPHATIC NEGATJVE FROM THE MINISTER Oi ,, CUSTOMS.
(F&£K> ASSOCIATION TBLEGRJLM.)
AUCKLAND, December 19. A deputation consisting of Messrs WarnocK. and Jaeger, representing the tanning interests of Auckland, interviewed the Minister of Customs (the Hon. F. M. B. Fisher) to urge upon the Government, to introduce an export duty on.New Zealand hides. It was pointed out that thetcost of hides had risen m a few years from 2d or 3d per pound to 10d and IQJd, duo to the world-wide demand for New Zealand hides, our hides being free from many of the defects noticeaol© in hides from South Africa, Queensland, and other places. The local demand remained unsatisfied as the result of this big drain, and the industry was therefore seriously affected. The 31inister said there was not tho slightest hope of the present Government acceding to such a request. By doing so they would bo opening the way for similar requests in connection with other natural products like butter, meat, wool, etc., *«•« would never do and it was well that the position should bo clearly understood.
