APPOINTMENT OF TEACHERS.
. 9 QUESTION BEFORE AUCKLAND BOARD. (press association teleubam.) AUCKLAND, December 18. A proposal in tho direction-of giving Sciiooi Committees more power than they have at-present in the appointment of teachers, was under discussion at tho meeting of the Education Board to-day, wJien Mr E. Banks moved: —"That In tho caso of all appointments, only ono name, via., that of tho teacher or applicant standing highest on tho graded list, bo submitted to the School Committee concerned, with tlie <»xceptioji that whenever the appointment is open to both sexes, the name of the highest female and tho name of the highest male on their respective graded 'l:sts be submitted to the School Committee concerned." I "Mr; Banks stated that at present 1 there were 104 more female than ma'e j teachers in the Board's employ. He contended that every school should be controlled by ii man. . There were 542 j schools in the Province, and, conse-J tjiiently, there should be 54*2 males in , charge of tiiose schools. In i! 01 schools ! there should be assistant lady teachers. \ If his suggestion were carried out. ii» ! would mean that they would have 341 ! more males in their employ than female teachers. One reason that thero were -not more male teachers was that the Boards had given preference .to women teachers to take charge of schools At from £120 to £210 par annum. For these vacancies both male and femaie i teachers should be eb'gible. Where a j man was in charge, tho discipline was I better, and he would be able to instruct i tho children in drill and agriculture. ■ Further, the carrying oi" his proposal , would give country School Committees j much more power than at present, j which was much to be desired.Mr A, R. Harris moved as an amend- [ ment:—"That the discussion be de-j ferred until a notice of motion by him- \ self, covering much of tho same ground | as Mr Banks's motion, had* been brought forward." Tie amendment was earned, and the matter was held over until a further i meeting. - j
