['" At tho enquiry into tho Mount" Lyell rdisaster,' Muftray, engineer to tho Lyell mines, said it was not truo that thero wero other ways' of getting out o£ the North' Lyell mine than by the main shaft, which was blocked. The shift bosses'., instructions set out that tho of tho men must always bo tho initial " consideration. Tho men had a Grievance Committee, but there wero never . any complaints made, Mr Curtain, Inspector of Mines, deposed to having visited the mine three days before tho disaster. Ho travelled by passes and stopesv to tho thousandfeet level without using tho main shaft, which tho men could havo use<l if tho' •fumes had not overcome them. Three minors declared that they tried to do so, but found tho passes blocked.
