« Advice "has been received in Christchurch that Mr H. G. Corbett has passed a second section of tho Law Professional examination. The Yen. Archdeacon Gosset, Dr. Arthur, Dr. Pickerill, and Captain H. Monro arrived from Woilington by the Mararoa yesterday morning. Mr A. L. Rowo and Mr A. Jacobseu havo been informed that they have passed the first law professional examination. The Rev. Archdeacon Harper and Professor Hunter left for AVellington by the Mararca last night. The Rev. A. H. Wheeldon and Mr O. S. Birt left for Wellington by tho Wimmera last night. Messrs L. Ranger, H. Henderson and A. Nicholls left for Gisborne by the Wimmera last ni_ht. Messrs A. E. Gee and Rudkin left for * Auckland by the Wimmora last night. Arrivals in town include: —Messrs J. B. Brugh, E. M. Thomson, A. B. Kerrow, W. Macdonald (Dunedin), J. W. Edmonson < (Napier), A. W. 1 Stifct, T. Bullock (Ashburton), W. H. Smith (Wellington), R. B. Wilder (Hastings), T. A. Stewart (Balclutha), P. C. Dake (Melbourne), W. A. McQueen (Invercargilt) and R. Heron (Timaru). Mr A. K. Firth, of London,- is in Christchurch at present. The. Hon. G. Keally, England, is a visitor to the city. Colonel F. V. Smyth, Officer Commanding the Canterbury District, returned to Christchurch "from Dunedin by the first express yesterday. Mr J. Orchiston, chief engineer to tho Telegraph Department, who has been in Christchurch for the last few days, returned to Wellington last night. Speaking to a "New Zealand Times" representative on Monday, tho Hon. J. A. Millar, M.P. for Dunedin West, said his health had greatly improved of late, and iii tho course of another month he thought he would bo in the best of condition. Meanwhile ho was taking a quiet rest. He . anticipated that, all being well, ho would tako his seat again in Parliament next session. Mr Millar leaves in a few days to spend tho Christmas holidays in the Taupo district. Mr Thomas Barker, postmaster at Courtenay place, Wellington, is to retire on superannuation 'at the end of the year. Ho has been in charge of tho Courtenay place post office over since it was opened. Mr Kirker joined the service in 1873, and has forty years' *:ervico to his credit. He joined the postal service in Wellington, and has spent most of his time in that city, but has also been stationed in Christchurch, Wanganui, and Blenheim. He was in charge of the new Te Aro Post Offico when it was opened. Subsequent to that he was officer-in-chnr_e "at fho Lichfield street office (Christchurch) and at Sumner.
