LYTTELTON ROWING CLUB. APATHY AXD NEGLECT. LONG CAREER ENDED. After a long and honourable career the Lyttelton Rowing Club has ceased to exist, and its affairs aro to be wound up. Founded as long ago as 1881, tho Lyttelton Rowing Club included in its ranks many enthusiastic oarsmen, and._was for many years a most flourishing body, financially sound, and with a large membership. Tho club rapidly rose in prominence in rowing circles, and its crews were always to be found competing it the principal rowing fixtures and regattas in New Zealand, and they achieved considerable success. The club became one of jho leading clubs in New Zealand in the oarly " 'nineties," and its crews carried off many honours. In 1893, at th© Christchurch Regatta, a Lyttelton crow gained tho muchcoveted honour of winning the New Zealand Four-oared Amateur Championship, and showed its sterling merit by repeating the performance at Picton the following year. The Lyttelton Rowing Club brought out many good oarsmen, the best known of course being William Webb, the first New Zealander to secure fame as the world's champion . oarsman. Webb gained his early training and experience as a rowing man as a. member of tho Lyttelton Club. Tho club enjoyed a fairly prosperous career until the end of 1907, when, owing to its j expansion, it was decided to erect a new boathouso. A bazaar was organised to raise funds for tho purchase of new plant, and, to liquidate the debt on the new shed, debentures to the umount of JEIOO wero issued and taken up, and the sum of £50 was personally guaranteed by supporters of the club. After that year, however, the club did. not receive the support to which it was justly entitled, and during o period of apathy the membership dwindled away, and the plant was allowed to get into a Btrite of disrepair and neglect. Funds could not be found to get new plant, and the last balance-sheet and report snowed that the membership fallen to thirty-five, including eighteen unfinancint members. j As the debentures were falling due and there were no funds in hand to meet the ; liabilities,, a general meeting was held last j • month, and it was decided to meet the debenture holders and the guarantors to dia- j cuss the position. A sub-committee was appointed, and a statement was drawn up | showing the estimated value of tho club's ' assoU. Matters were fully discussed at a j conference, which decided that the affairs j of the club should be "wound up,"' Messrs j D. Page, W. Ilollis, and W. Woods being up- j pointed liquidators. This decision whs placed before a meeting of club members on Tuesday night, and in view of the apnthy dia- j played in regard to club affairs,, it was > agreed that tho best course to adopt would be to accept the decision of the conference. The club property will now be disposed of, i and, it is expected, will realise a sufficient • sum to meet all liabilities. In rowing circles ttie passing of the Lrttelton Club will be viewed with regret. For tho first time in many years, Lj'ttelton will be unrepresented in the rowing events at its annual Xew Year's Day Regatta.
