EDUCATION BOARD.
ORDINARY MEETING.
Tho North Canterbury Education Board met yesterday. Present:— Mi- H. Boyd (in the chair), Messrs T. "W. Adams, E. H. Andrews, C. A. 0. Hardy, C. H. A. T. Opie, G. llennie, and Dr. C. J. Russell. The Normal School and Technical Committeo reported that it had approved tho arrangement that the distribution of prizes in connection with Manual Training . Classes should take place in tho Technical College Hall- on tho afternoon of Friday, December 13th. With regard to tho Training College a telegram had been received from tho Department intimating that tho usual triennial conference of Inspectors and Principals'of Training Colleges would bo held on or about February 12th. It was agreed to draw tho Building Committee's attention to the urgent need of improving the ventilation of most of tho rooms in the Normal" School. In tho matter of an improved heating system for the Training College, it was pointed out that tho Board's architect had already authority to call for tenders on the specifications prepared, it being understood that tho Board's ability to carry out the work would depend on its receiving, a grant from the Department to cover the cost. It was agreed that the Training Uollego session should ploso on Friday, December 6th, approximately the dato on which, tho term had closed for several years past. Tho action of the Instructor in circularising a number of teachers with reference to a Summer School to be held in January next was approved. Tho Buildings Committee reported that it had resolved to request tho Department to make a grant to allow the Board to have nn additional room added to tho Addinccton School. The application of Linwood North was allowed to stand over pending; receipt of the information already asked for as to tlio number of children attending the school from outsido districts, the partitions recommended by tho Chief-Inspector to be cone on with. In regard to New Brighton, a letter was received from tho Department pointing out that th's year's quarterly returns of attendance did not show such an increase as would justify the addition proposed. The matter was allowed to stand over for the present. A statement was submitted showing approximately £2,500 available for maintenance and re-building purposes for the remainder of the Board's year. Tli9 report as presented was adopted. The General Committee reported that a letter had been received from the Department, intimating that grants for freo class books ■would be discontinued, and that in lieu thereof, grants for school and class libraries would be provided, under certain conditions, for continuous readers for class teaching, and for other books for school libraries. The matter had been referred to the Board's Inspectors for consideration ami report. Tho report was adopted.
