NATIONAL PROVIDENT FUND
AND FRIENDLY SOCIETIES. (Flt-AS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) • AUCKLAND, November 26. A deputation from tho Manchester Unity of Oddfellows interviewed the Prime Minister, and pointed out that the organiser of the National Provident Fund organised by the State became strong in competition with tho Friendly Societies. Thoy asked tho Government to encourage their good work by means of a subvention. In tho Old Country, tho national schemo was operated through tho Friendly Societies. The deputation believed that tho same could be done here with economy to tho State and benefit to tho societies. As matters stood, tho State was competing unfairly.
Mr ■Mnssoy said the proposal to operate tho scheme thronpii the Friendly Societies was now to him. Ho could say nothing about it. Regarding the alternative proposal, some schemo was already being considered by the Cabinet to bo plnccd before the House next session, and ho thought the Societies would admit it was just and generous to themselves.
