CITY COUNCIL.

LAST NIGHT'S MEETING

The Christchurch City Council met last night, when there were present the Mayor (Mr H. Holland), and Crs. W. H. Cooper, E. Smith, H. Hunter, W. MiLer, F. Burgoyne, A. S. Taylor, A. Wdiiams, H. J. Otley, and C. D. Morris.

CORRESPONDENCE

The Spreydon Borough Council mado application to have certain connections made with the city high pressure water supply. Tne letter was referred to the Water Supply Committee. A petition was received from the cycle dea.ers asking that the hours of trade should be changed from 8 to 1 on Thursdays, and 8 to 9 on Saturdays, to 8 to 6 on Thursdays and 8 to 1 on Saturdays, the other days to remain unchanged.

A formal resolution was carried certifying that a majority of those engaged in tho trade had signed the petition.

The Canterbury Centre of tho New Zealand Swimming Association applied for the use of the Tepid Baths on December 16th and 19th to hold a swimming carnival. It was stated in support of the application that the Centre had at considerable expense arranged for the visit of several leading swimmers from New South Wales, and the fact of holding the meetings in the Tepid Bath would be a good advertisement for that institution.

It was dccidod to givo the dates, th© Centre to pay 25 per cent, of gross takings. Tho Town Clerk, writing on behalf of a conference of employees of local authorities, asked if the Council would subsidise.a superannuation fund for employees, and wou'.d contribute towards the cost of an actuarial report in connection with the project. The request was acceded to.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

The Abattoir Committee reported regarding the proposed conditions of work and rates of pay for abattoir employees, that it had further considered tho matter, and recommended the Council to agree to the request of the Freezing Works Emploj'ees' Union that two members of the Committee may be authorised to meet two members of the Union to discuss the proposed conditions of work and rates of pay. If the Council adopted the recommendation, Cr. Morris, chairman of tJi© Committee, and Cr. McCullough, had been appointed to represent the committee at the conference.

The report was adopted. The Finance Committee reported tbat claims for subsidies on subscriptions for suburban libraries were exceeding the amount placed on the estimates, but it considered that the fuii subsidy should be paid if possible, and requested authority to expend about £70 over the amount placed on tho estimates for the purpose. The Committeo also reported that debentures of the destructor improvements loan of £5000 had boon sold to the value of £700 at par, tlio rate of interest being 4J per cent. The money would be required to meet the payment for the electric motor and induced fan, a contract for which had been let.

The report was adopted. Regarding the watering of streets w.ith the tramway plant, the Works Committee reported that the watering of the streets by tho Tramway Board's plant was done under the direction ot the City Surveyor, who had instructed the traffic manager to use his own'd'scretion as to tho necessity of watering, it being understood that the sprinklers wero to bo used when the dust was flying. Owing to the force with which the water was driven upon the streets by the Tramway Board's plant, instructions had been given not to water with the sprinklers streets constructed with tarred macadam, those at present being watered by the Council's water carts. Alterations wero now being made to the sprinklers, and when completed they could be used to water tho tarred macadam streets as well. The report was adopted.
