SHEEP.
THE SHEEP COMPETITIONS.
The sheep for tho 1912 scouring competition wero not looking quite as well as they did last season, owing to tho rather rough weather they have experienced. Tho Wolseley Cup was awarded to a ram entered by Mr Jas. Stevenson, this being the eecond timo ho has won tho Cup. Previous [winners havo been:—lßo2, Mr F. H. I Smith; 1903, Mr T. A. Phillips; 1904, Mr G. Coulter; 1905, Ensor Brcs; I&C6, Mr C. Goultcr; 1907, Glen of Tekoa Estate; 1908, Ensor Bros.; 1909, Culverden Estate; 1910, Mr T. A. Phillips; 1911, Mr J. Stevenson. It will thus bo seen that Messrs T. A. Phillips. C. Goulter, Ensor Bros., and Stevenson havo each won tho cup twice, and * further win on their parts will result in the handsome trophy becoming their own property. Thirty-five two-tooths have been entered for the 1913 competition, tho breeders being: Messrs D. D. Macfarlane, Ensor Bros., A. W. j Rutherford, junr., J. H. Davison, T. . Chapman. J. Stevenson, C. Goulter, j and W. W. Mcßae, and the Lake Coleridge Estate. Tho former winners cf the merino scouring competition were: —1901, New 'Ze-'and and Australian Land Co. (Hakataramea Estate); 1902, Chas. petition went to Mr Jas. Stevenson's ram. The Corricdale and halfbred wool and mutton competitions for 1912 have yet to bo decided, and thero aro eighteen entries for 1913 in Corriedales, and eighteen for the halfbred.. Last year tho Association Cup for ■Corriedales was wen by Mr K. A. Chaffev, and the Lister tfophy by Mr A. W. Rutherford, junr. FTNT*. COMBING MERINOS. Tho fine-combing merino classes were well filled, and although the entries wero net as numerous as those of last year, there waa littlo to complain of os regards tho quality. In fact, the judge. Mr C. P. Hugonin, an old Canterbury man, said ho was quito aston'shed at the good class of sheep that he handled. The nsnal troublo ot bad classLns was almost non-existent, and only ono ram, ono of Mr Jas. Stevenson's, was cast for having strongcombing characteristic.. Tho entries for tho last throe Shows were aa follow :— 1010 34 1911 ... 43 1912 ... ... ... 37 Mr Chas. Ensor's ram tbat won in tho open class was awarded the bluo ribbon for the championship, this being a sheep bi _d by Sir Samuel Mc.Caughey, the Australian specialist in w erinos. Sir Geo. Clifford was tho winner in two-tooths, beating Mr E;-_or. In this class a redoubtahlo North Islander was put out for Fhortn__ cf staple, and Mr Jas. Stevenson's rain for being out of his class. Tho ram hogget prize went to tho Maraekakaho Estate, who got tho second as well, barer bellies being tho Southern failing. Mr Stevenson got away with tho rod card for a pair of ram* hocgets. Tho champion owe, and tho winner of tho Glenrnark Cup, was a Maraekakaho representative, a very nicclv-woollod sheep, who won in a f-ood class. Tho other ewe classes ateo wont to Hawko's Bay, Mr McLean certainly showing some very nice sheep indeed, being both well grown and well woolied all over .
