DRAUGHT HORSES

There were 107 individual entries of draught horses, besides a number of •teams. Tho breeding of draught horses in Canterbury is evidently settling down to the adoption of the modern Clydesdale, and is coming into lino with Otago and Southland, but weight is not being neglected. Tho fivo entries of agod stallions wero all imported horses, as wero threo of the three-year-old colts, and nearly all the young stock shown were also by Scottish-bred horses. ,"' The fine upstanding, showy horse Baron Bold repeated last year's performance for Mr Jas. Patrick by winning first prize in the aged class, and second to him was placed Mr John Boag's Black Douglas, a horse with fair size and splendid action, but his mealy black colour is not attractive. Messrs Thomson and Co.'s Newton Chief was placed next, but Mr K. Mcintosh's Baron Carlton should at least have been in this position. Mr J. D. Wythe's Prince of Cowden, a nuggety plough horse type, was tho other entrant. Eight out of ten three-year-old colts entered came into the ring, and it was one of the best classes of colts of the ago that "have been seen at tho Show for some years. Mr Jas. Patrick's Baron Sandy, who is a splendid , advertisement for his sire, Baron Bold, after whom he takes in conformation , and fiction, was an easy first, and also won the vice-president's special prize. Mr W. O. Rennie's imported Proud Bannerman, a stout, useful type of horse, was second, and Messrs Thomson and Co.'s Wairongoa Footprint, who won tho championship at Palmerston North a week earlier, was third. This colt has improved considerably from last year, but beyond being an active mover, is not an attractive-looking animal. Mr J. D. Wyllie's imported Massena was very highly commended. Mr W. J. Jenkins's imported Nethan Vale is a neat colt that should improve with age. Fourteen out of seventeen two-year-old colts came-forward, and they formed an exceptionally fino class and even better than .the three-year-olds. A few of the animals should, however, havo been added to the gelding list, one in particular having no moro barrel than a good trap horse. The winner, Mr Jas. Patrick s colt by Baron Bold, out of a Bancor mare, was quickly spotted, tho ringside judgment coinciding with that of tho judges. The other places were more difficult to pick. The second award finally went to -Mr Sidney Smith's Baron Burnside, by Baron Fyvie out of Emerald, a colt bred by Mr J. F. Reid, and Mr H. Donaldson, Jun.'s, roan, Banks' Footprints, by Lord Banks, was third. Tho commended tickets went to Messrs T. Taylor, F. Clemens and Sons, and H. Saunders. Four brood mares came beforo the judges, Messrs A. and W. Gillanders's Royal Buby being .an absentee. Mr Jas. Patrick's imported pair, Maggie Young, by Baronson, and Innerpessary Belie, by Baron Hood (both mares being granddaughters of Baron's Bride) were placed first and second in that order. Maggie Young was reserve champion last year, and was shown in fine form. Mr J. C. Lochhead's Girlie, by Sandy's Heir, a low-set, good-topped mare of the older order, was very highly commended. Messrs Thomson and Co.'s Ena, who was second last year, but has gone off her best shown form, was tho other exhibit in the class. Thero wero only two absentees out of a class of fourteen. three-year-old fillies, and with one or two exceptions they were a fino, promising lot, and took; some separating. Mr * J T. Taylor's Nerissa, by Premier Pride—May Queen, a fins

evenly-mado filly with plenty of weight and good action, was first, and Mr P- j Shearer's Silver Craig, another daughter of Premier Pride, out of Jessie Craig, a filly with a good top, and tho biggest animal in the class, was second. Mr Jas. Patrick's Baroness, by Baron Bold, was third. These fillies filled tho first threo places in the two-year-old class last year, but the two latter wero J in reverse position. Tho commended tickets went to Messrs H. D. Butterick,*' J. Grigg, and J. D. Wyllie.- Thoro j wero only two three-year -old geldings shown, both belonging to Mr Jas. j Wyllie, and Major was placed over i Prince, tho pair being good sorts. '_en out of eleven two-year-old fillies faced tho judges, and though they were somewhat uneven, tho majority wero of ex- . cellent quality, and weight was not j lacking. Mr Jas. Patrick had another win, his Royal Rose,-.by Baron Bold out of Moss Rose, a very* attractivo filly> being first. Mr Jas. Wyllie's Jean \ Everest, by Baron Everest, which ' should develop into a good type of brood maro, was second, and Mr Thos. Taylor's Jean Talbot, by tbo imported Sir Talbot, was third. The commended cards went to Messrs Jas. Patrick, A. S. George, and P. Shearer for a trio of neat black fillies. A grey two-year-old gelding, shown by Mr Jas. W'yfliowas the only entry in his class and was awarded a . second prize. Yearling colts and geldings formed a strong class in numbers and quality, though several wero in backward ' condition. Thirteen out. ol eighteen catalogued came forward, aad tho winner, by tho imported Barou Winsome,' was shown .by Messrs Thomson and Co , Mr Jas Patrick being second and highly commended, Mr John McLauchlan, third.'.Mr J. D. Wyllie vi ry highly conimf-ndcd, and Mr John Shearer, cbmmr-nded. Nino yearling fillies came into the ring, and there were no absent pes. Thoy found rathe.• a moderate class, with a few good exceptions. The threo principal awards went to Messrs J. D. Wyl'.io, E. E. Jenkins, and Jas. Patrick, in that, order, and tho commended cards, wen* taken by Messrs <L D. Wyllie, F. Crump, and Thomson and Co. Mr Jas. Patrick was the only exhibitor of aged geldings, and was awarded first and second prizes for a really good pair. Dry mares usually make an attractive show, and the ten that wero paraded was probably the finest class of theso mares scon on the _ground, quality, bizo, and condition being well icprescnted in all of them. Messrs Thomson and Co.'s imported pair, Baron's Brilliant (last year's champion) and Agatha wero placed first and second respectively, and a very fino mare, Premier Princess, shown by Mr John McLauchlan, was third, and the commended cards wero taken by Messrs Jas. Cochrane, John Shearer, and J. D. Wyllie. in that order, with Premier Blossom, Premier Diamond, and Queen. Mr Jas. Patrick's Baron Bold, with his sons, Baron Sandy and the first-prize two-year-old colt, was the only entry to come into tho ring for the sires' progeny class, and was awarded first honour*}-.". Mr John McLauchlar won tbo mare and progeny class with Flora McGregor. Mr Jas Patrick was tho only exhibitor of a pair of geldings, and tho samo breeder won in pair of mares, Mr McLauchlan being'second, and Mr Thos. Taylor. highly commended. In four-horse teams, Mr McLauchlan reversed the position with Mr Patrick, and 3fr P. Shearer was highly commended. The class for four mares formed a great show, and excelled tho display made by tho dry mares. Messr. Thomson nnd Coi's quartet Baron's Brilliant, Ena, Agatha and, Lady Wai-rongo-i were placed first, Mr Jas Patrick's team second, and Mr J: McLauchlan's was highly commended. A -■ow cbs*. for four pt the progeny of ono stallion not necessarily ;the.,;pro--perty of ono owner, attracted five. eu - tries, but only two came into tho rinir. and a quartet of grand fillies, by Mr P. Shearers Premier Pride, gained tho coveted honour for tho Ashburton district, Mr Jas Patrick'!- Baron Bold's progeny, a good, but,not such an even lot, being second. The new classes for heavy draughts, placed-in the catalogue for the benefit of breeders whose horses wero'nbovG the size and weight of tho modern Clydesdale type, attracted three entries of stallions and four of mares or fillies. Of the threo stallions entered, only one, Mr J. Grigg's imported Shire horse, Boro' Salesman, a weighty but somewhat plain animal.passod tbo veterinary examination and he wis awarded first prize. Only two of the mares were brought forward and Mr E. E. Jenkin's Princess Ena was placed first over Mr Jas. Stevenson's Blosa 2nd. Tho. small amount of support accorded to these classes, and the fact that there appears to be a recognition of the fact that weight is required to bo retained in the modern typo of draught horse, indicates that thero is-no necessity for the special heavy weight classes. .Tho chamOion- • ships were then awarded. 'Tn'stallions, Mr Jas. Patrick's Baron Bold again carried off tho premier honour, tho reserve going to Mr John Boag's Black Douglas. The mares championship went to Messrs Thomson and Co.'s Baron's. Brilliant, nnd'the • reserve to .Mr Jas. Patrick's Maggie Young, tho Same positions as wore gained by these mares, last year. ' .-„■ '
