CASUALIIES.
ABLE SEAMAN KILLED
At about 12.30 p.m. yesterday, a man named Benjamin J. Piccard, a seaman on board of tho Federal-Shiro steamer Surroy, was killed at Lyttelton by falling down No. 3 hold. Deceased had been coming up the ladder, and when near tho top had missed his footing and fell a distance of about 25 feet. When picked up it was found that tho man's skull had been fractured, and ho had apparently been killed outright. Tho body was taken to the morgue, where Dr. Newell pronounced lifo extinct. On searching the man's clothing, tho remains of a bottlo of whisky wero found under his jersey. At the inquest, held before Mr H. W. Bishop, District Coroner, evidence was given that deceased was 42 yoars of ago, and a nativo of tho ArgentineHo had no business in tho hold, and a caso of whisky was afterwards found to bavo been broached. A verdict of accidentally killed was returned.
