FIGURES FOR SEPTEMBER QUARTER. Tlie Christchurch Magistrate's Court returns for the quarter ended September 30th are as follow, the figures for the corresponding quarter of last year being given in parentheses: — ~ . Number of criminal sittings presided over by a Stipendiary Magistrate, civil 27 (38), criminal 72 (72); number of sittings presided over by Justices of the Peace, civil 1 (0), criminal 5 (7); total number of sittings during the quarter, 105 (117); number of civil cases heard by Stipendiary Magistrate under ordinal.- jurisdiction, 923 (509). and, under extended jurisdiction, 7 (13); number of civil cases heard by Justices under ordinary jurisdiction, 35 (0); aggregate amount sued for, £15,731 0s 9d (£11,646 16s Id); aggregate amount recovered, £10,035 7s (£5432 16s Id); number of applications heard in Court or Chambers, 84 (91); number of orders mado (other than a judgment summons), 79 (74); number of plaints entered, 1405 (1132); number of distress warrants issued, 178 (128); number of judgment summonses issued, 231 (161); number of orders made on judgment summonses, 6. (36); number of warrants of committal issued, 17 (7); number of writs of arrest is_ued, 4 (3); number of summonses anc. other processes served by the bailiff and assistants within two miles, 1210 (912); over two miles, 2G3 (221); number of distress warrants executed by the bailiff and assistants within two mi'.«9, 98 (45); over two n>les, 20 (24); number of warrants of committal executed by the bailiff, 15 (9); number of writs of arrest executed by the bailiff, 4 (3); amount of civil fees paid in stamps, £783 5s (£6-8 133); amount of licensing fees paid in stamps, £23 3s (£lO 10s). The number of persons taken into custody, summoned,.or apprehended was:—Males 1171 (1086), females 172 (103). The amount of criminal fees paid in stamps was: —£138 0s 6d (£133 fia 8d), tho amount of* fines paid being £317 10s 9d (£291 15s 8d), making totals of £155 lis 3d (£125 Is 4d). The following old age pension business has been transacted during the quarter:—Granted : Pension claims, 63; renewals, 434; widows' claims, 15. Refused: Claims, 5; renewals, 2; widows' claims, 2. Pending: Claims, 3; renewals and widows' claims, nil. The number of criminal offence cases for the above quarter is as follows:—Number of arrest cases: Males .194: females 87; total -81. Number of aummons cases: Males 731, females 80; total, 811. Total number of cases: Males 1125, females 167; total, 1292, Number of cases for juvenile offenders included in above: Males 68, females 14; total, 82. Number of cases from previous quarter: Males 24, females 1. The following civil business was transacted:— Plaints entered—European plaintiffs and Maori defendants, 11, amount* £107 0s 9d; P_uropea_is on.v, 1391, £15,644 6s; totals, 1405, £15,751 6s 9d. .
