who has been appointed to tho Chair of Classics at Canterbury College, was | selected by a Commission in England consisting of the Acting-High Commissioner for the Dominion (Mr C. "ray Paliiser), Professor Sale, and Mr J- « • Joynt (the representative of the -New Zealand University in England). Tho Mataura Presbytery and the Southland Presbytery yesterday nominated the Rev. J. Kennedy Elliot, ot Wellington, as .Moderator of the Presbyterian General Assembly for next year. The Dunedin Presbytery nominated the Rev. W. McAra, of Kaikoura. Colonel Cossgrovo yesterday received a cablegram from London informing him that tho Boy Scout Council has decided to make a voluntary levy of Id from each willing Scout in order to purchase a suitable wedding present for General Baden Powell. The subscription list is to be closed on January loth, ; and the Commissioners in all New Zealand provinces have been instructed to forward contributions to Cossgrovo at Tuahiwi not later than November. 30th. Mr H. M. Campbell, M.P., contracted a severe attack of influenza a fortnight ago, which developed into a mild form of typhoid. A Press Association message from Hastings states that on Monday his condition was very low. Ho showed a slight improvement yesterday, but is not yet out of danger. A reunion to welcome Mr E. " • Relph, of tho N.Z. Farmers' Co-opera-tive Association, was held on Monday evening at the Federal Club, at which twenty-four of thc heads of departments were present. Mr A. AY. Jamieson, ac-ting-manager, wa3 in the chair. Th_ opportunity was taken to present Mi* Janv'eson with a solid silver salver, Mr A. S. Clarkson referring to the manner in which tho staff had been treated by tho acting-manager during Mr llc-lpli's absence in England. The proceedings wero most harmonious throughout. Mr W. Stevenson, a leading member of Court Woodford Foresters, Kaiapoi, and a foreman of the Volunteer Firo Brigade, was on Saturday presented with a purse of sovereigns. Tht presentation was mado by Bro. G. Miller, P.C.R., who expressed best wishes to Bro. Stevenson on taking up farming on the Glenmark country. Mr B. A. Board was presented by the employees of the International Harvester Company yesterday with a. travelling companion, on the occasion of his departure for Auckland to oc•cupv a position in the branch of the Company in that city. Mr A. Burgess, who made tho presentation, spoke of the good feeling that had existed between Mr Board and his fellow employees, and hoped that he would mcc. with every success in the northern city. Mr Board suitably responded*. The representatives of insurance companies met on Saturday last, to tako leave of Air F. W. Armstrong, who for tho nast ten years has been electrical inspector to the Canterbury Firo Underwriters' Association. A letter apprcciativo of his past services, and wishing him success in tho future, together with a purse of sovereigns, wero presented on behalf of all the insurance Companies in Christchurch. On Monday afternoon, on behalf of the staff of Maling and Co., Ltd., Mr H. Mcllraith presented to Mr G. R. Maling a piece of silver plate, on the occasion of his approaching marriage. Mr John M. King, who joined tho Tax Department thirty-three years ago, has been appointed Deputy-Commis-sioner of Taxes and chief clerk of that branch of tho Public Service. Mr J. H. Aitken has been appointed Attorney and Chief Agent for Canterbury of the Northern Assurance Co., Ltd. „ , ..' Colonel Fisher, of the Salvation Army arrived from Wellington by the Maori yesterday.
