The meeting of the Oxford Debating and Mutual improvement Society was held in the Coronation Hall on Thursday. Tho President was iv tho chair, and there was a large rtttendanco ot members and visitors. A very interesting lecture was given by Her. Air Holloway on "The Flora.of New Zealand." Tho subject was dealt with in a popular way, and a good deal of interest-, and enthusiasm were aroused. Botany was shown to bo an ideal science for the training of the powers of observation, of deduction, and for developing powers of thought. New Zealand flora was contrasted with that of England, South Africa, and of Australia. Special allusion was made to our alpine and sub-alpino flora, and Mount Oxford ond the forest reserve ol Cooper's Creek wero indicated as happy hunting grounds of the botanist. It was suggested that a "botanical circle" bo formed in connection with tho Society for tho purposo of studying the plant lifo of the district, and of stimulating and developing an interest in botany. On the motion of Mr C. R. Sheat, Mr - Holloway was heartily thanked for his lecture.
