A great crowd assembled in the Stadium to witness the opening rounds of the thousand pounds tug-of-war contests. In the international events Scotland beat Ireland, and Fitzpatrick's Australian team beat Hackenburg's Australian team. t f In the all-comers' championship the New Zealand Drivers' Union (Wellington) beat the sawmill employees.
