.' A meeting of the North Canterbury ' Educational Institute was .held <>n Saturday. 28th inst. Mr F. Evans, the president, occupied the chair. It ; was decided that the following bo the ; remits from the North Canterbury branch to the annual meeting of the New Zealand Educational Institute: — I (1) That a Council of Education be appointed to control primary, technical, and university education on the educational side, while the business management is .retained by local authorities. (2) That the important portfolio of Education should be under the control of a Minister who is not occupied with other important portfolios. (3) That tho N.Z.E.1., believing that the present secular system of education is the only just system of national education, is opposed to the Biblo-iu-schoola movement. (4) That those teachers who have not been able to avail themselves of the superannuation schemo bo allowed to join on adequate payment of back 'contributions. (5) That in spite of recent increases in salaries, the N.Z.E.I. brings under the notice of Parliament the present inadequate payment of teachers, pupil teachers, and students in training colleges. <6) That the constitution of the N.Z.E.I. be altered in order to admit as members all persons engaged in the teaching profession. (7) Thnt the N'.Z.E.I. is strongly of opinion that teachers' residences should be built on thoroughly up-to-date lines, and should be prqvided with the usual modern conveniences.' (8) That clause 150 of the Education Act be arnendtd to the effect tliat an inspector of schools, bo tho only person authorised to grant certificates of exemption from attendance at. school.
