DAMAGES FOR LIBEL.

(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) MASTERTON, September 27. A unique libel action was heard in the Supreme Court te-day before the Chief Justice, when a local native, named Taiawhio te Tau, claimed £501 damages for libel against Father Detach, a well-known Roman Catholic missionary priest, on account of ah article published in the Maori paper "Whare Kura," of which defendant is editor. 3 Plaintiff is the head and bishop of tho religious organisation known as "Tho Seven Rules of Jehovah" and, as such, wears a garb which resembles a ? bishop's attire of the Anglican Church". Defendant published a statement in tho "Whare Kura" which was held to ridicule tho Bishop by alleging that jho was "a woodhen in peacock's feathers." ■*

The jury returned a verdict for plaintiff. and awarded him £5 damages. Costs were allowed on lowest scale.
