Several newspapers strongly condemn tho Senate's action, and emphasise that Britain may retaliate by reducing tho tfuez tolls, and thus divert trade thither. Exporters regard the Bill with extreme disfavour, fearing that the traflio will fall into the hands of one or two steamship trusts, and that uTtimately the rates will be scarcely below the present land rates.
Professor Giddings, of Columbia University, declares that tho Senate has abandoned tho idea] of moral integrity which the United States ought to be the first to uphold, and has placed tho country in the position of a bully. H-i adds that the B!l! absolutely disregards tho country's pledges. WASHINGTON, August 10. President Taffc to!d callers to-day that he expected to sign tho Panama Bill passed by the Senate. Telegrams of protest against American registry of foreign ships indicate that owners aro fighting against tho Uill's passage.
