MONTHLY MEETING
The monthly inot'ting of tho Council was held yesterday afternoon. Mr F. E, Jones, vice-pres>ident, occupied the chair, owing to the indisposition otthe president, the Hon. H. F. Wigram. , Mr A. Ivaj'o wrote asking for leave of absence for about four months owing to , ,his absence on &• visit to America. Leave was granted. Tho Minister of Agriculture replied to tho letter in connection with the branding of oats required by the Australian Commonwealth that ho had made representation to f tho Prime Minister of Australia on the subject, and was in receipt of a communication from him to the effect-that. the matter would receive attention. As soon as tho further reply was received it would bo communicated. Letters were received from the Grain Merchants' Association on the subject of grain sales in store, distmc.tive stripes on. sacks, and tl& weight of sacks of grain carried by tho railways of the Commonwealth as compared to Now Zealand. The matter of distinctive stripes on sr.cks was referred to the Produce Sectional Committee to suggest appropriate colours for the various sizes of sacks. Tho Adelaide and Melbourne Chambers of Commerce acknowledged receipt of letter on tho subject of differential shipping freights from Europe. The Melbourne Chamber asked for a copy of further information which would be received later. The secretary o f the Culvcrden-"VYamt B.ailway League wrote asking the Chamber to be represented on the deputation to wait- on the Government urging tho construction of this lino. A telegram had been sent regretting that tho Chamber was unable to arrange for a delegate to attend the deputation on Friday last. The Minister of Railways wrote that he could not sec his way to bind the Department to undertake tho weighing of produce for trade purposes. The Chamber might rest assured, however, that no effort would be spared to ensure accuracy in weights. The Under-Secretary of Internal Affairs wrote that tho Secretary of J State, "Washington, had been informed that Mr Kave would represent the Canterbury Charabor of Commerce afc j the Fifth International .Congress or ; Chambers of Commerce to be held in ', Boston in September. . i Tho Chairman of the Lands Commit- I tee forwarded a copy of the Land , Agents' Registration 'Bill, and would be pleased to hear evidence in Wellington on Tuesday, 20th inst. It was decided to refer the matter to a meeting of land agents for consideration. Mr S. H. Moreton wrote asking permission to exhibit a picture in the Chamber Hall. Tho request was granted. The British Empire League wrote asking the Chamber to appoint a representative to act on the Provisional Council. It was decided to ask Mr Gilbert Anderson to act. The question of the revision of the scale of mercantile charges was referred to the proposed meeting of land agents to deal with. Mr A. E. Craddock wrote resigning his position on the Council. His resignation was accepted with regret. The Kaikoura County Council wrote that tho Government had favourably considered tho question of the construction of the Hapuku bridge. It was intended that a deputation which was to wait on the Minister of Public Works in reference to the South Island Main Trunk Railway, should urge the speedy erection of the bridge. The secretary of the South Island Main Trunk Railway League also asked tho Chamber to co-operate with the deputation to the Government. The President and Mr Marriner were appointed to represent the Chamber on th© deputation.
