THE WEATHER.
EBE TELEGRAPH WIRES BROKEN IN MANY PLACES. A serious breakdown in the telegraph system occurred dunug Monday night between Waiau and Kaikoura, owing to bad weather and a heavy fall of enow. The wires were broken in many places, though no poles were displaced. Linesmen from Waiau and Kaikoura were sent out early yesterday morning, Vtii they repaired a considerable number <£ Lrreaks, working until overtaken by darkness last night. One heavy copper wire fortunately remained unaffected, and had to bear all the despatches to Wellington during the day. The use of a second direct wire was obtained about 6 p.m., and with the assistance of alternative routes via Nelson and Greymouth, the accumulation waa overtaken shortly after 9 p.m., when outward traffic was normal. It is anticipated that tho damaged lines will be restored early this morning.
