WELLINGTON, July 16

An interesting return, showing the amoUnte'paid'to tho newspapers in tho four principal centres for Government advertising during the three years ended March 31st last, has been preparod for the information of tho Hon. F. M. B. Fisher (Minister in Charge of the Government Advertising Department). . •

This return shows that tho following amounts have been paid during tho three-year period to the papers mentioned:—Auckland "Star' f £1253, Auckland "Herald" £1243. Auckland ■"'Weekly News" £413, Auckland "Observer'.'£44l, , "Weekly Graphio £263, "Lyttelton Times" £1383, Christchurch "Press" £1354, Christchurch '-Spectator ,, (weoklv) £536, Christchurch "Weekly Press ,, £260, Christchurch "Evening; News" £34, Christchurch "Star -, £33, Dunedin "Evening Star" £1320, "Otngo Daily Times" £1401, Otngo "Witness" £357. "Wellington "Evening Post" £1903, "New Zealand Times" £1824. "Dominion" £126. "New Zealand Truth" £118, "New Zealand Freo Lanco" £559. ' "In.view of the extraordinary condition of affairs revealed by this return,' Mr Fisher'stated yesterday, "I have issued instructions to tho advertising departments to tho effect that advertisements are to be inserted in those papers from which the departments concerned nrq likely to get tho most benefit, and that tho Department is to bo run as a commercial and not as a political institution Where largo sums have been divided between certain newspapers to tho. esdunipn, of others, tho amount is to be. split up without the acgrogato vote being exceeded..-The distribution of tho advertisements is to bo absolutely impartial.
