NOTES FROM BANKS PENINSULA.

The heavy rain which was general all over the Peninsula last week haa brought down a number of slips on the roads, one of the worst being that on the old Akaroa road, leading from Gorman Bay to Akaroa. It came down on Friday night, stopping all horso traffic until the Akaroa and Wainui Road Board's men had cleared a track for riders on Saturday morning. A good deal of satisfaction is being expressed locally concerning the favourable impressions of Mr Parry, the Government electrical expert, who examined the Akaroa electric light scheme and pronounced it excellent. Since the transferring of the irons from the house lighting circuit, there have been no complaints at all about the flickering of the light, and there is no likelihood of there being any more trouble after tho receipt of Mr Parry'B report by the Akaroa. Borough Council on Wednesday. The Peninsula Territorials and Senior Cadets aro most conscientious about their training, and the parades aro well attended. A good deal of interest is being taken in Mr H. D. Buchanan's Kinloch camp, which will commence on Monday. July 22nd. There is every chance that all the Coastal Defence, Mounted, and Senior Cadets, will take advantage of the camp for their field firing, and that a good many Peninsula clubs will take part in the Kinloch Shield matches for Peninsula Rifle dubs. It is expected that; about two hundred men will attend tho camp. , * A boxing tourney is being organised among tho members of the Peninsula Coast Defence Company, which will proibably he lield at the beginning of August. A preliminary tournament will be held for the Peninsula men, and j two selected/to take part in a boxing tournament,' which is being arranged by Colonel Cooper, Commander of the Ctfastal Defence Forces of Canterbury. There are a number of Akaroa men taking part, and several in , O'Kain's 'Bay.' , "■- ..-' Tho completion of the Onawo Flat road and wharf is again under consideration, and the Akaroa County ! Council" have : promised £200 towards the work. A deputation, consisting of Messrs J. W. Wilkins and P. Cunningiiara, waited on the Akaroa and Wainui Road Board on Saturday, and asked the Board to reinstate . tfyeir promised grant of £200 towards the work. After a long- ditecussion it was. decided to only grant £150. This will be a blow to the ratepayers in the special rating area, and it will be received rather as a indication of no-confidence in the engineer's estimate. Tho ratepayers seem to be sceptical regarding the present estimate of £1800 to finish the work, no doubt on account of the previous under-estimation of the work. But this time there should be no mistakes, as two engineers -have given the same estimate of tho work independently, and the ratepayers - intend obtaining a contract price from a. contractor to corroborate the estimate of the engineers before a poll is taken. The piece of road completed last winter out o? the £200 granted by the, "Government Tourist Department proved .that tho engineer's estimate was well within the mark, and this ought to prove to tkcm that the £1800 will finish the work with ease. It-is expected that n further grant will be received from the Government, and that the ratepayers in the special rating areii will have only ti.'raise £1200. . Tho new wharf at Onawe Peninsula is urgently required, as the wharves in both Barry's Bay and Duvauchelle are in a frightfully tumbled down state. : A number of the residents at Barry's Bay and Duvauchelle, hope the wharf and road will bo completed before the dairying season is commenced, as chee-so can be shipped and requisites landed for the Barry's Bay Cheese Factory at the new wharf at a much cheaper rate than that at present, as no transhipping at "Akaroa will be required. y y
