-diss Fanny Durack, of Sydney, won the final of the 100 metres swimming raco in 82 1-5 sec. - Miss Wilhelmina Wylic, also of Sydney, was second in 85 2-ssec. THE AMATEUR STATUS.

There is much controversy over tho question of tho amateur definition. Somo countries, by Stato grants, raiso big funds, and so enable men to abstain from work and devoto time to training for a long period. This is not in accordanco with tho ideas of British authorities on the subject.
