Mr A. Harris said that he could not allow the statement of the member for Avon to pas; unchallenged. Tho Reform Party had gained its m-es«nt position "argoly because of the love and confidence with which it regarded its leader. He ridiculed th/. idea that new members of the Party were looking for portfolios; they woiy. there for tho good of the country. Beforo very lon<c. *r Harris predicted, the new Gove r nment would Ijavc the confidence, approbation, and approval of many gentlemen who were now boniehtcd enough to sit on the opposite side of the House. If "*e thought for on!! moment that the Reff'-m Psr-ty. war. going to bring down anything of a Tory. Conservative, or reactionary nature, he would leave it at once. Mr H. Atmore said while adding his congratulations, he was not unite so snro that the country was to ho congratulated. Ho bitterly ntlncked those LtbnrMs who. he said, had put out the lato Government.
Mr Payne (loudly): Hear, hoar. In conclusion, Mr Atmore expressed his intention of supporting the newGovernment if they would bring down Liberal measures, Ho particularly referred to legislation for closer land settlement. Mr G. Laurenson also expressed his congratulations. He had no doubt Mr Massey would fill his high position with dignity and with credit to tho country. He thought it would be inappropriate of him at this juncture to strike any discordant note. (Ministerial applause.) Mr J. Colvin expressed a kindly feeling for the'new Government, but when the general election came round again, ho would be found fighting them tho saino as ever. (Laughter and applause.)
