Dean and Barnes took up tho bowling, and Carter quickly fell to a brilliant left-handed catch by the former at point, 140-9—5. Ward was last, but failed to score. Pegler batted for fifty minutes, and the innings lasted 160 minutes. Khodes and Hobbs opened England's second innings, Nourse and. Pegler bowling. Nourse was troublesome. Hobbs was in snlcndid form, punishing Pegler severely. Tbe running between the wickets was smart. Rhodes in playing back was bowled after batting for 40 minutes- This made Pegler's hundredth wicket for the season. -13— I—lo. Spooner filled tho vacancy, and th-o batting became quiet, Hobbs hit up 53 in 45 minutes. Faulkner relieved Nourse at 53, and Carter replaced Pegler at ■">"). Hobbs was taken at midoff, alter giving a fine all-round display, including 6 fours and 6 threes. 78—2—05. Fry was and Pegler .replaced Carter at 84. Fry, after a poor showing, skied Pegler to Nourse at mid-on by a poor stroke. 05 —3—7. Hearno started cautiously, and an excellent partnership ensued, the century appearing iv 95 minutes. Faulkner was keeping an excellent length, and sending down an occasional googly. Pegler sometimes over-pitched his balls. He was replaced by Nourse at 136- At tho lunch adjournment tho score was 141, Spooner having 39 and Hearne 22. On resuming the attendance was 7000. The batsmen were careful, and Pegler and Nourse bowled steadily. 150 was hoisted after 135 minutes, biit 15 runs later Hcarne's middle stump was knocked down by a splendid ball from Nourse. He batted for CO minutes, but his display was only moderate. Spooner was then 50, of which 30 were singles. 185*—4—35. Woolley, Jessop and Foster left in quick succession, five wickets being down for 180, six for 181, and seven for 181. Smith was next, and Faulkner replaced Pegler at 197. Tho second century was signalled in 190 mjnutes, but shortly afterwards Spooner was bowled by a googly from Faulkner, after a masterly and chanceless innings lasting 155 minutes. Ho hit 6 fours. 207—8—82. The ninth wicket fell at 224, and tho innings closed for 238. Tho heat was oppressive when tho visitors went in to bat, but the wicket was easy. About 8000 spectators were present. Taylor and Tancred faced Barnes and Foster, the South Africans requiring 331 to win. The batting was quiet and tho bowling steady. Tancred alone made a stand, Taylor, White, Llewellyn, and Faulkner going for 49. White was caught off a tremendous skier, and Faulkner was bowled off his pad by a ball which he did not attempt to play. Fifty was hoisted for 70 minutes' play. Dean replaced Barnes at 67, and Nourse was canght off the new bowler's first ball. Two runs later Strieker was run out in a manner. Rhodes relieved Foster at 77, and Snooke went at 85. The century appeared after 125 minutes' play. Pegler was badly missed when 7. Tancred batted for 130 minutes. When stumps wero drawn, 7 wickets were down for 105.
