ASHBURTON COUNTY COUNCIL.
The monthly -meeting of tho Ashburtou County Council was held on Friday. Present-.—Messrs C. J. Harper, (chairman), J. Cairns,. W. T. Lili, G. Murdoch, W. Morgan, and J. Studholme. It was decided to suggest to the Minister of Internal Affairs that the letters "Ash" bo tho registered letters for motor-cars and motor-cycles to be in future registered within the County. Tho tender of N. Fitzgerald at £4:# 13s 8d was accepted for the'protective works at the Ashburton river ;bed. - Mr Lill pointed out that owing to the con- ; dition of a main drain running down Ford's road from Tinwald to Flemington, a good deal of the land was being continuously flooded. It was decided that tho drain be cleared and repaired by day labour. Tho Chairman remarked that he felt it his duty as treasurer, to move "That the water race charges be increased from 5d to 6d per chain." — Tho motion was carried, A letter.was received from the Upper Ashburton Road Board agreeing to pay its share towards the cost of a" bridge over the Hinds river, the Road Board's, contri? bution. not to exceed £180. A deputation from the Mount Somers' Road Board waited on the Council and asked that the County Overseer draw up specifications for the protective works above the Bowyer's stream bridge. fThe deputation also asked that the Council would do something to give settlers at Mount Somers facing the tramway reserve some outlet from a street or roadway running between the tramway and their respective properties. The Council decided that the County Overseer draw up the specifications-for the protective works, and that the Mount Somers Road Board undertake to keep the water running under tho. bridgo for at least five years. It was decided to strike the usual rat© for the current year for tho Ruapuna No. 2 water race "loan account. The other loan accounts in this special district being in credit, it was decided that no rate be struck this year.
