SUMNER AND THE TRAMWAY BOARD.
TO THE EDITOR OF "THE TRESS." Sir, — I iwofinise fully that every <lay wo may loam some n&w -tiling, that is if we are not too self-conceited. It appeals tii mo as ji now proposal, that made by the chairman of the Tramway Hoard to the -deputation from Suriiner residents who waited on the Board* at their last mooting, namely, that a deputation coining before them to protest against a certain threatened action on tho nart of,the Hoard should bo asked ■to submit a .policy for tho Board's guidance. If tho iioard has managed to struggle nlong without a policy until its dying hours, it's hardly-worth while bothering about one now. As to whether it is in a financial or an unfilinncial position not oven the • members know. Tho chairman, in reuly'to tho Snmner; deputation, said "he hoped to hftar /some siiKyostion for reduc.in;'; the deficiency on thp tSuitiiier lino." But in there a deficiency ? On turning v? th<; report a? printed in, your issito of April 2nd 1 find Mr Hooth. in referring* to tlie system as :i wliole, erwiited with tho following statement: — ''The fourTroekly nrofit' and less account • which ■has been supnlied durini; tho year showed that during tho winter, months a considerable deficiency was created, urid that all the extra profit earned by tho Stunner tnvftie was required to make that amount up." On the same date Mr. Hill i* oivdited with the statement that "Suimior was one of the best-pay-ing soot-ions'': and again, f, Snmncr was not tlio ea;iso of th<i tinancfal danger.'" . What .'to ire to believe—tho statement appearing in your' issue of Anril i?nd, or the statement made by the chairman on Mondpy inst?
With- r.v'rcrt to Mr J. A. FlcsherY ho is rcrortetl to hare ?-axl that it was "hnlf nn hour of wasted time;" that the (Imputation-had .gone. What is his position? Tho protest of thi* Stnnner rodents submitted throuLch tho <!cnutntion to tho Board and dciiu'crl by the courteous Mr Fleeher, "half an hour of wasted time," was ■exa'-tlv nn all fours ■with the protest madt! by tho Now llrighton residents at thf> T'Ublir moetiny hold la-st week at which ho as Mayor, presided. Tho time of that meeting was, I presume, an hour waited. . Was money wa-sted for rent of room*? The motion carried, w'tl. one dissentient, "That this meeting views with .ilarm and approjieusion the proposed action of tho Tramway Hoard in raising the price of concession faros, and urges that such action would be disastrous to the interest! , of this district," would be, in tho opinion of Mr J. A. Flesher, a waste of words. True, he is not reported to have said so. In that case the reporters doubtless left with the ■audience; in our caso tho reporters stayed behind. It would appear as if some members of the Board had a few very ordinary things to learn.—Yours, etc., JOHN* BARR.
