A DIRECT CONTRADICTION
Sir \V. Ramsay is repotted to havo made a statement in-tho Press the other day, reflecting on tlio stand-ud of work at the New Zealand University. The statement wa.s as follows: — ''The standard is not maintained. Thero is no standard, and your decrees ato of absolutely no value in Europe.'' This statement wa.s dial-' lenged hy Mr J. C. Adams, diairmfln ot the Canterbury College Hoard of Governors, in his report to tho Board on Monday. Mr Adams quoting auI thorities who spoke favourably of thc work done hy the (Jnivcrsity of New Zealand. A iurtJior contradiction to Sir \V. Uamsay's remarks comes in the shape of a letter from Mr "NY. 1,. Bosschait, Consul-General for the Netherlands, Melbourne, a copy of which Dr. A, J. Anderson, Assistant Inspector-General of Schools for New Zealand, has forwarded on to Canterbury College. Tho let tor is as follows:—"I have the honour to inform you thnt a Royal decree of December 28th. 191J, State Gazette No. 072 declares in Article la (all faculties) that J tho certificate of having passed the examination, hy which the university in Now Zealand grants one of tho degrees: 'Bachelor' or "Master' or 'Doctor of Arts' as equal to the certificate mentioned in Article. 11 of the Netherland University Act, with the -reserve- mado in Article 131 thereof. Further, it is declared in Article '.I ; (faculties of medicine and of mathematics and physics) that the certificate of having passed the examination by which the university iv New Zealand grants one of the degrees: 'Bachelor,' or .Master.' c-r 'Doctor of Science' (provided the holder shows that at this esamination or a preceding one he has proved to possess sufficient knowledge of Latin or Greek *■ is equal to tho certificate mentioned in Article 11 of tho Netherland University Act, with the reserve made in Article 134 thereof. Consequently, students of *.he university in New Zealand who havo any of the above-mentioned decrees, are admitted to the umversitiiv, in tho Netherlands without any examination, and are in a position to obtain a degree without having again to «o through the whole study iv Holland.''
