WAIAU.
A number of enthusiasts are trying to work up tho cause of dairying in tlio district. There a?o a good many settlers .here. who. havo had considerable experieneo in the industry, and theso men contend that the- district is admirably adapted for the purpose. Ono Baiik's Peninsula man states that in his opinion the district could product , products equaL to, if not superior, to tho Peninsula. He contends that the settlers could, by running daia-y cattle in conjunction with sheep, easily double tho value of their present turnover, in addition to greatly improving tho pastures. Thoro is undoubtedly a good deal in these arguments, and if fanners would jio into the matter thoroughly, the district could easily run 2000 cows, without diminishing the carrying capacity of sheep. A number of settlers have already offered to provide cows it" a factory ig started. The homo separator is being used a good deal, and a considerable amount of butter expoited that way. Ono of tho Canterbury dairying companies has made enquiries, and would be prepared to estal)lish a creamery immediately the railway was extended. As it is, tho distance the creamery would bo from tho station constitutes itself a serious bar to the success of tho undertaking, and makes botli settlers and dairy companies shy of establishing the industry in case the cartage proved disastrous. Given the facilities dairying would speedily l>econie an established branch of farming in the district. Until then, however, it seems hopeless to expect that any definite attempt will be made to sot the industry in motion. The football season opened ori Saturday, when trial games wero played between teams selected by Messrs S. Stott and D. when S. Stott's team won by 18 points (G tries) to 12 points (4 tries). Another practice match will be played next Saturday, and on the following Saturday the annual match, Lyndon versus Hißhficld, will be played. The local club intends competing for the Workman Cup, a trophy presented by Mr "Workman, of Kaikoura, for compoti-
tion between the Waiau, Cheviot, and Kaikoura Unions. * nn . The rainfall for April was ti.(Wm ; making the total tor the year to dale 1<3.34in.
