THE NEW ASHLEY BRIDGE.
tO TUB EDITOIi OF "KITE PUES3." Sir,—Aβ tho North Canterbury district is about to inaugurate tho opening of one qf tho finest bridges in tho Dominion at a cost of closo <m £13,000, spanning tho Ashley river, and as the work is of a.substantial and also ornamontal structure, being built of ferro<oncrot<i in a, workmanliko manner, would it not bo advkablo for tho districts interested, and Rangiora borough in particular, to Itavo tho approaches to conform with tho main structure, and have concrete walls from tho onu of tho bridge to curvo outwards, and concrete, pillars at the ends, with a brass plate sot in giving the .name* of tho contractor, architect, and chairmen of tho different Road Boards, wlio have worked so energetically in forwarding this much-needed bridge? It is simply a disgrace to Be« tho approaches put down as they aro being done with loose shingle bulging out against the handrail and ends of tho old structure will cause continual repairs unless proper wings are provided ns stated. Surolv the districts that have subscribed their quota would not demur in havimr £-2UQ moro jtH'-nt on same, which will make it a lasting monument in North Canterbury.—Yours, etc., W. K. A.
