MANY MUTILATED
EVIDENCE OF STRUGGLE FOR LIFE..
(Received May Ist, 10.30 p.m.) HALIFAX May 1. Tho steamer Mackay Bennett found 306 bodies, including thoso of 18 women. Ono hundred and sixteen were buried at sea owing to being in an advanced stage of decomposition and the lack of accommodation on board. The remainder wero landed. Ninety bodies have been placed in coffins, but one hundred are coffiuless, awaiting identification. Two thousand fivo hundred dollars wero found in Colonel Aster's pockets. Many of the bodies were mutilated, tho arms and legs, being shattered, probably duo to the explosion when the ship went down. YFho men's watches had stopped at ten past two,. Evidence of a fierce struggle for life •was depicted in tho faces of tho dead, they being distorted with terror. The Mackay Bennett found an immense, black berg, badly shattered, which probably had been the cause of the disaster.
