RISE IN SHIPPING SHARES.
A frrcat deal of speculation (says ill* "London Shipping Gazette") has boon indulged in c-nncorniiif; tho true nieaninpr of the rise in the price of the stocks of various shipping companies trading to nnd from Australasia, more especially as som« partial information—authentic co far as it goes— lias l>ooll given out. We understand that resotiaiions of an extensive and complicated nature have lately been proceeding between the groups and firms comprised in the Australian and New Zcaiand conferences, including nlso the Blue Funnel Line owned by Me«rs Alfred Holt and Company, and trading from Glasgow. When these are completed. issTimiiig them to be successful in their outcome, it will prnably bo.found that agreements have been arrived at which, while bringing about some changes in government, will tend to ensure peaceful working in the. Australian and China trades for some time to come. "The Times" speaks of lack of support, for the suggestion that negotiations are proceeding for a still closer understanding between the P. and O. and the other companies in •the. Fur Eastern und Australian shipping trades; and suggest* that the undoubtedly strong, financial "position of the P. and O. Company may have'stimulated buying by powerful interests,, possibly with the idea of securing a considerable degree of influence.
