A. AND 'P. SHOWS.
MALVERN WINTER SHOW
Officials:—Pres-dent: Mr G. Kuihenord. Vice-Pi;epident and Secrotary and.Trcasuror:- Mr Gμ. F. "Wright. The Malvern A. and P. Association ' was dogged by ill-luck ia tho holding of its winter show. To start with tho fixture was postponed from the 25th to the 30th on account of rain and unpreparodness. The 25th turned out a fine bright day, in striking contrast to yesterday which was bitterly cold, and generally undesirable. Possibly the bad time experienced was because this was the thirteenth annual winter show and thirteen is usually supposed to !io an unlucky number- The train from Christchurch was not well patronised i by intending visitors to tho disptoy, two or three half-frozen judges being about tho total, but tho residents <'f the district turned out surprisingly well considering, and there was a reasonably good muster on the grounds. As a good many of the judges who werd expected did not put in aa appearance, •others had to bo pressed into service, but in spite of all drawbacks the general arrangements were carried out smartly and the judging was concluded in good time. The comfort of all officials was well looked after by the president, while the secretary, who was assisted by Miss Colthart and an able staff, worked hard and successfully to bring all affairs to a good conclusion. It was only to be expected that the cold, wet weather would keo exhibit- I ors and visitors from a distance away, but tho main gaps occurred in the ' light horse section and most of the , others were well filled. The following were tho entries &t the shows held in 1910, 1911, and 1912, under tho various headings:— tl , A . 191 ° 1911 191 2 -Draught horses ... 56 62 57 Saddlo horses ... 43 60 46 Harness horses ... 26 22 35 Cattle ... ... 21 11 11 Fat sheep and lambs to 62 80 Purebred sheep and lambs ... 40 78 72 Pigs ... ... 7 8 4 Poultry ... 30 B0 25' Dok« ... '~' ... 24 27 21 Grain and seeds ...- 87 89 56 Roots ... ... 240 191 198 House and dairy produce ... 211 184 163 Totals (excluding post' entries) 861 824 768 From the above table it will be noticed that there was no noticeable decrease in any of tho more important sections in the show ; on the contrary, I there was a gratifying increase in sheep and harness horses. Tho best section I? the show was undoubtedly the sheep. Tho fats were exceptionally good and therp was a row of nine nens of enormous and well-finished wethers that wore certainly unequalled at the last winter show in Dunedin. Tho outstanding breeds among these wethe-s wero Wensleydale. Shropshires and Border Leicesters, and the* first-named wero remarkable for size and the second for compactness. and solidity. The fat .lambs were also excellent, although the weather had taken the bloom off them to a certain extent, rho chief prize-takers in the fat classes wero Messrs F. Bull, W. J. Jenkins, McClelland Bros., Pace's estate, Goo. F. Wright and Geo. fl. Judd. The purebreds wore also a well-se-lected typical lot. The well-known Darfield breeders, Messrs It. and J. lleid, practically swept the board with their English Loicesters, Mr A. Gunn doing the samo in Borders. No Shropshires were penned but there was some smart comne" ion in Southdowhs,, and some very nice ewes and ram lambs shown. In this breed Messrs W. J Jenkins, F. C. Candy, and H. A Knight were the most successful prize winners- Messrs Reid Bros, wero again to tho foro in Corriedales, in which breed Mr Knight and Page's estate also scored, and Mr Jas. Deans won a red card taken in a farmers' owe class. The draught horses wero a creditable, though rather uneven lot. In most classes the competition was elightly woak, and the really good horses that generally appeared in each class had things pretty much their own way.Somo fine mares were ringed and the bulk of the young stock was promising. Tho red card takers in ths draughts wero Messrs E. E. Jenkins, W. J. Jenkins, G. Wells, A. and W. Gillanders, J. Wells, Jas-.. Deans, and F. E. Cogan. Messrs Gillanders won the prize for tho best mare on tho ground. The saddle horses were a moderate lot; a yearling belonging to Mr I\. Wotherspoon stood out for quality and there were some nicohorses among tho hacks. The premier awards went to Messrs F. Cogan, W. J. Jenkins. R. Wotherspoon, D- Wells, H. A. Knight, A. and"W."Gillanders, and W. 0. Berry man. Tho ponies were not very good though an odd one or two were worthy of warmer commendation. Tho young stock among the hatness classes were fairly good, , and there wero a few upstanding sorts with good action among tho adult classes. Messrs McClelland Bros., and Messrs Mnnson had tho worthiest wins. With, the exception of Mr W. J. Jenkins's three nice Ayrshirea the cattle were just good useful sorts though the prizes given to Messrs W. J. Baxter, J- G. Manhire and F. Cce.in wero merited. The pigs and poultry were moderate and the entries small. Some goodlooking .sheep-dogs wero shown and tho rlisplav of grain and seeds was fair. On the other hand tho roots and prtitoes were very good indeed and the display in the produce shed, helped !-y n, good show of weeds shown by thn Agricultural Department, was oxccllent in every respect.
