ASHBCItTOX. At tho mpotim; of tho Ashburton Borough Council on Monday evening, tho Mayor (Mr H. l>nvis) reported tho debit balance at the bank to bo £272-1 7s lOd. The water works engineer reported that the cylinder in connection with the new well for tho high-pressure water supply had been sunk to a depth of I feet, leaving a further depth of 8 feet to sink. Tho Key. 0. I*. inglis, on behalf of the Ministers' Association, waited on the Council with reference* to the permission which had been given the Municipal Hand to give a Sunday concert from the band rotunda. He pointed out. that tho Ministers' Association was oi opinion that Sunday concerts given so close to the various Sunday schools would be detrimental to Sunday school work, and have a tendency to disorganisation. He hoped the Council would seriously consider tho matter and discount anything which miiiht have a tendenev to secularise the S.ibbnth. The Mayor <:ave notice to move at the next meeting of the Council:— •That 1K) further permits be granted for Sunday concerts from the band rotunda:" It was decided to apply to the Lands Department to have the control of a strip of land on tho north bank of tho Ashburton river, and on which a nnnil»er of old-atre pensioners had built themselves homes, vested in tho Council. It was decided to strike a general rate of Is Od in the £. The estimated receipts and expenditure for tho year (£5774) were considered and passed. Amongst the items for expenditure are included £300 for street maintenance, £250 for metalline. £250 concrete channelling. £150 asphalting. £450 lighting, £3*o for water srtrmlv, £500 un-keep oi' the Domain. £'200 fire prevention. £250 bridges and culverts. WOOLSTOX. The Woolston Borough Council met on Monday. Present: —The Mayor (MiMcGregor Wright). Crs. Graham, Gimblett, Wright, Xewton, Taylor, Morris. Gilmore. On the recommendation of the Works Committee it was decided :—(1) To fence on boundary between library and Methodist Church; (2) To give' Mrs Martin' notice to remove fence encroaching on Radley street; (3) To lilt in ditch on the east sido of Smith road; (4) To have ironwork of band rotunda painted. A voto of thanks was accorded to thoso Indies and gentlemen who assisted at the library function, and to the Town Clerk and Council staff. The Council recorded its sympathy with tho relatives and friends of those lost on the Titanic. Mr W. 7'eny was - appointed cattle ranger at i-, salary of £10 per annum; also dog ra.'iger. and to look after heavy traffic. The clerk was directed to take immediate action on all reports from the rancor. Tho Drainage Board claimed £27 10s 3d. share of cleaning Heathcoto river, which was referred "to the Town Clerk to obtain further information. Mr B. J. A'jer forwarded accounts in connection with the new library, the total cost of which was £858 f)s Oil. On tho anol'cation of the Stale Fire Insurance. Office, it was decided to transfer all policies as they mature, to tb"h office. The Mayor was nnpoijited to represent the Council at the meeting regardin"- Local Government Bill. The clerk was directed to certify to n remiisitiou from grocers to the Minister for Labour to make closing hour on four days 7.30 p.m., and on Saturdays 10 p.m:
