STATEMENT BY THE PREMIER. (press association telegram.) AUCKLAND, April 24. Speaking to-night at the annual dinner of the Glevedcn branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, the Prime Minister . (Mr Mackenzie) referred to tho question ot\ protection raised by a previous speaker, who had said the . agricultural industries wore suffering.. Mr Mackenzie said there were' industries in the country, established Tinder protection, that were producing as good an article as could bo imported. . Ho referred particularly to tho woollen industry. There was no doubt that mercantile associations were in league with houses in the United Kingdom, and that was productive of harmful results. The Government intended to appoint a Commission to sec that the cost of living was not unduly raised, and that the concessions granted by tho Government were enjoyed by the people.
