DR. THACKER AND THE CANAL COMMISSIONERS.
TO THK EDITOR OV "THE I'liySH."
Sir, —My attention has been drawn to a statement made by Dr. Thacker at on open-air meeting'held at Sydenham, viz., "That the Canal Commissioners hail been feted and honoured by the Anti-Canalitcs."
This is absolutely contrary te> fact. The Commissioners, neither individually nor collectively were entertained or feted cither by Canalitos or by AntiCanal ites, having at the outset determined to take lip an entirely neutral -■osition. We carefully avoided accepting hospitality which might be wrongly construed. Personally I offended many old and esteemed friends in Christchurch through my attitutle in this respect. 1 had determined to take no notice ef anything that appeared in the Press in connection with the rej-ort of the Commissioners, but in justice to my colleagues and to myself, 1 could not allow such an unfair and untrue statement to pass without notice. The other statements made by Dr. Thacker are too contemptible to e-all for any reply.-—Yours, etc..
