HON. G. LAURENSON AND THE TIMBER WORKERS.

(rasas associatiok •nxxciuM.*' WELLINGTON. April 11. Replying to a deputation from tho Timber Workers' Conference, tho Hon. G. Laurenson said ho had a good deal of sympathy with thc proposal to nationalise the timber industry, but bo did not think it could be tackled in tho near future. Ho did not sco how he could avoid giving mortgagees first call in tho caso of bankrupt employers. Personally, ho favoured increasing the duty on foreign timber, but that would mean raising tho cost of living. Tho establishment of a State ferry service would bo a necessary corollary to the completion of the- South Island Main Trunk railway. On tho question of tho prico of food, Mr Laurenson said tho milk supply should bo dealt with by municipalities. Under tho municipil system tho cost of distribution would be reduced by 75 per cent. Mr Laurenson mid ho also supported statutory preference to unionists.

Tho shearers' Conference, sitting in Wellington, decided to establish a head office in Wellington not later than September Ist.
