PERFORMING ANIMALS SUFFOCATED.

A fire in a largo shed at Kennington suffocated ten trained baboons, one mandrill, and two performing dogs.

At midnight on Monday an outbreak of fire occurred' in the genera! storo, post and telephone office, occupied by Mr J. H. Lloyd. Tho glare seen in Mr A. Bramley's house, caused him to cive tho alarm. There was no ono about, but in a short time tho ringing of tho school bell brought many assistants. Tho flames had full hold of the stores, said to belong to Mrs Gebbie, valued tit £500, and insured for £350 with tho South British Company. A quantity of new stock bad boon unpacked, and there was £40 in notes also burned. None of the mails or telephono instruments wcro saved, Tho etock, valued at £6CO, was insured with the Queensland Company for £350. The iiro Quickly spread to tho Oddfellows' Hall, valued at £500, insured for about £335 in the ■ 6ame office, a"d it was soon at the mercy of tho flames, only a pinno being saved. Mr T. Whitlow's barber's shop, and Mr G. Felton's boot shop—from which the latter's tools, a sewing machine, and part of tho stock wcro removed—were destroyed. These latter buildings were part of Mrs Gebbie's block. Tho loss to Mr Felton would be £20. The dwelling of Mr J. Tull, carrier, was next in danger, but his furniture and horses in the stable were got out, an-1 a bucket brigade kent tho fire under.
