GISBORNE/ March 2Q. A conference was held between the men and the master butchers this afternoon. Mr Westbrooke, Inspector of Awards, attended, and endeavoured to effect a settlement, but he was unsuccessful, and tho men ceased work at 3 p.m.. The shops, however, were opened shortly afterwards by tho master butchers, by whom tho several businesses will bo carried on. There does not appear to be a prospect of a settlement at present, unless the masters concede the men's domands that their agreement should permit of affiliation with the Auckland Union. Another conference wUI te held to-morrow morning. About thirty men are affected.
