SPRINGS.
At the monthly meeting of the Springs County Council there were present:—Messrs Andrew (Chairman), Lochhead. McCrostie, llyan and Wolfe. A. Chamberlain waited on tho Council in. reference to a proposal to widen tho Leeston road in front of the old accommodation house, offering upwards of ono chain wide at : the corner and running out to a point cither way for a sum of £200, which price included tho removal N of tho old accommodation liouso which stands on part of the land in question, or that part between the fence and tho corner of the old building about 40 links for £75 and the Council to remove a leanto, which now extends to within 6 or 8 feet of the fence. Eventually the Council decided to offer Sir Chamberlain £75 for the latter part, Mr Chamberlain to remove the leanto. Correspondence was read from the Minister of Public Works stating that tho £300 voted for metalling the Green-park-Motukarara road would be available if tho work was completed in the course of a month or six weeks. The Wairewa County Council wrote undertaking tho supervision of the two~ bridges over the Halswell river between this and that county for £o per year, in addition to a proportionate cost of maintenance. The Council had no objection to their being the controlling authority, but could not agroc to pay £5 a year for supervision only. The Ellesmero County Council wrote in reply to a request to meet a deputation from this Council at Coo's Ford in reference to a proposal to remove willows and taking of gnyrel from their sido of the stream, stating that they had' inspected tho locality, and that the matter of removing the willows was under consideration. They would rather the Council <lid not tako gravel from "their side. Tho Council was surprised at not being advised of tho proposed in- ' spection as per arrangement, and still wished to meet a deputation from the Council at the Ford. The Chairman and Mr Wolfo were appointed to represent the Council at the conference q>l the Canal Commission's report. Tenders we.ro considered for cleaning the district drains, and the following accepted:—Walker and Gillatt, Day's road drain Is Gd, Powell's Is !)d, Bethell's Is 3d, Marshall's ]s 4d and Swamp rond Is per chain ; H. Page, Collins and Serjeant's Is 9d ; and Leeston road at Ellesmero Is 3d; T. Everest Fincham's Is 3d, Chamberlain Is 4d;W. Bray, Murray's and Hubbard's drain at Is 4d a chain. There being several drains not let the Clerk wa t s directed to let them privately or get them done by day labour as opportunity offered. In reference to Mr Sly's request for a better outlet for storm > wat<"r on what is known as Woodward's road, it was resolved to inform Mr Sly that if he and Mr Mounce, unjoining, could come to terms in the matter of cleaning the drain in front of the land the Council would assist.
